PAVING SCREED
The Operate a Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Machine course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a hot mix asphalt paving machine while performing their daily duties.
Learners who achieve the course objectives will, upon completion, be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions, plan for work activities and prepare the work area, start and shut down the hot mix asphalt paving machine and operate and transport the hot mix asphalt paving machine to and from the work site.
Entry requirements
Candidates must have a grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Getting to know the asphalt paving machine
We discuss the different types of asphalt paving machines and the components of a tractor-drawn and self-propelling asphalt paving machine, including the tractor and screed units.
Basic mechanical appreciation of asphalt pavers
Legislation
We take learners over the legal responsibilities in a nutshell, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996 and the use of protective clothing.
Asphalt paver safety precautions
We discuss hazards, safety equipment checklist, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for operators, safety on paving projects including first aid for hot asphalt burns, steam and explosions, open belts and pulleys, fumes, hydrogen sulphide, dust cloud accidents, slippery surfaces and asphalt safety reminders.
Daily checks and procedures
We take learners through walk-around, start-up and shutdown checks and procedures, precautions during refuelling, weekly or 50-hour checks, safe maintenance procedures and tyre safety.
Controls, levers, pedals and instruments
Operating and transporting the asphalt paving machine
We explain the operating techniques and precautions, starting of the engine, moving off with the machine, shifting between forward and reverse, steering, working on inclines, compacting, parking, checking after shutdown, cleaning and transporting the machine.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
Training programme accreditation
This training programme is aligned to the Construction Education Training Authority (CETA) in accordance with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) unit standard 243272: Operate a Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Machine.
SVA certification policy
Provided that the entry requirements have been met, and the learner found competent to operate a hot mix asphalt paving machine, the candidate will receive a certificate of competence that is valid life-long, excepting where it is the policy of the company to have the operator refreshed every two years.
